SHARED MENTAL HEALTH CARE PROGRAM EVALUATION REPORT
The Program was established in 2003 and was implemented with the WRHA directly operated clinics. At the same time the program was introduced on a small scale into a small number of fee-for-service practices.
In 2008-09 the Shared Care Mental Health Program significantly expanded into the fee-for-service environment, with around 100 Family Physicians (alternate funded and fee-for-service) and 10 nurse practitioners participating. The number of Counsellors and Psychiatrists doubled and there was a shift in the administrative staff of the program. This expansion marked a dramatic change in the delivery of mental health within primary care, and in the region’s role of providing interprofessional support and operational resources to fee-for-service practices. It is within this context that this evaluation was undertaken.

EVIDENCE-BASED CLINICAL GUIDELINES FOR IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES (Canadian Medical Association Journal)
The Canadian Collaboration for Immigrant and Refugee Health used an evidence-based clinical preventive approach to develop guidelines in four general areas: infectious diseases, mental health and physical and emotional maltreatment, chronic and noncommunicable diseases, and women’s health. The Collaboration concludes that more work must be done to improve immigrants’ access to health services. In the meantime, it is hoped that this initiative will provide a foundation for improved preventive health care for immigrant populations.

INTERPROFESSIONAL TEAM DEMONSTRATION INITIATIVE (ITDI) TOOLKIT
The development of collaborative interprofessional teams within primary care is a strategy that has been used nationally in Canada for more than a decade. Primary care teams that incorporate providers such as physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners and allied health workers are desirable for several reasons. One is the complementary nature of these team members’ expertise to that of family physicians and their ability to contribute to comprehensive quality patient-centered care. Another is the ability to increase primary care access to address the difficulty many Manitobans experience in finding a family physician to accept them as a patient and provide them with ongoing comprehensive and continuous primary care.
The development of this provincial toolkit is to assist and support in the implementation of interprofessional practitioners into fee-for-service (FFS) practices. This toolkit can be used by facilitators in all health regions to help FFS clinics explore the potential contribution and impact of various team members, select a provider, and successfully incorporate them into clinic practice as part of an interprofessional team.
This toolkit was developed within the Winnipeg Health region, but is intended to be a resource for all of the health regions in Manitoba. This is a flexible document which provides several guiding principles and resources, and our hope is that all regions will benefit from it.

BREAST IMAGING DIRECT REFERRAL
EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 2, 2015: As part of Manitoba’s In Sixty Cancer Action Initiative, patients requiring diagnostic breast imaging will now benefit from a Direct Referral process. This new process will come into effect on February 2, 2015.
To support Direct Referral for Breast Imaging, a new Provincial Breast Imaging Form has been developed and will be shared with Primary Care/Ordering Physicians.
What is Direct Referral?
Breast imaging patients requiring more tests following an imaging appointment will be directly referred to their next appointment. The Radiologist will include the following in their report: what test is needed, where it will be performed and the level of suspicion to ensure physicians are involved in their patient’s care. Patients with high suspicion will have their appointments expedited to meet the IN SIXTY Cancer Action timelines.

MIDDLE EAST RESPIRATORY SYNDROME - CORONOVIRUS (MERS Co-V) INFORMATION
Below is a link for a Middle East Respiratory Syndrome – Coronavirus (MERS Co-V) Quick Reference Sheet for Community settings. Also listed is a document with MERS Co-V background information for those who are interested. These are being sent on behalf of the WRHA Infection Prevention and Control Program Team.
There have NOT been cases in Manitoba (or Canada) to date. This is being sent to facilitate preparation, should the situation change. Although the risk to Manitobans is currently low, clinicians should be alert for possible importation of MERS-CoV.
Important actions at this time include enhanced vigilance, rapid notification and appropriate IP&C practices for patients/clients who present with signs/symptoms of severe acute respiratory infection (broad scope to signs/symptoms of acute respiratory infection). From here, the focus can be narrowed to those patients with the travel history/exposure, and so on, to determine MERS-CoV versus other severe acute respiratory infection.
Please feel free to contact Chantelle Riddle-Yarycky at criddleyarycky@wrha.mb.ca or (204) 833-1743 with any questions or concerns.
