The WRHA's many Allied Health professionals represent a wide range of regulated health professions. Together, they are a critical - if sometimes unsung - component of Manitoba's health-care system. Earlier this year, we put out a call for submissions highlighting some of the great work undertaken by programs and individuals working in various capacities in the field of Allied Health. Though we can't highlight everyone or even every Allied Health discipline, we are proud to share the following profiles that illustrate just some of the many contributions being made by the WRHA's Allied Health professionals. We extend a heartfelt "thank you" to everyone who works under the Allied Health umbrella. The work you do nothing short of indispensable, especially in these challenging times.

Spiritual Health Family Liaison Program

The Family Liaison program was developed for Winnipeg Intensive Care Units (ICUs) to facilitate connections between the patients in ICU and their loved ones who, due to visitor restrictions, were prevented from visiting them. St. Boniface Hospital Spiritual Health Practitioners Darlene Ingram and Wanda Derksen lend their skills as compassionate listeners, grief and loss counsellors and facilitators of rituals such as prayers and blessings to help keep connecting patients, families and staff connected.

Geriatric Day Hospital teams help seniors maintain their independence

The WRHA's Geriatric Day Hospital teams provide services to adults 65 years of age and older to keep them healthy so that they can be independent, safe and happy. Located at Deer Lodge Centre, Riverview Health Centre, Seven Oaks General Hospital, St. Boniface Hospital, and the Health Services facility at 425 Elgin Avenue, the day hospital program provides access to an interdisciplinary health-care team that includes doctors, nurses, and Allied Health professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, dieticians and dietitians and social workers.

Four decades of service: Audiologist Florent Gaudry

Kind-hearted and professional, Florent Gaudry has provided exceptional client centred audiological service to Manitobans for the past 40 years. As a young audiologist, he started his career in Thompson, Manitoba with the Provincial Hearing Conservation Program before moving to the Seven Oaks Hearing Centre in Winnipeg, where he has been a strong advocate for both his clients and the audiology profession.

In a year filled with uncertainty and constant change, acute care Speech-Language Pathologists have risen to the challenge, demonstrating courage and resilience, continually seeking new information on how COVID-19 impacts communication and swallowing, and finding ways of providing care while juggling challenges related to infection control.

The Operational Stress Injury Clinic

The Operational Stress Injury Clinic is a specialized outpatient program that only serves veterans of the Canadian Forces, current Forces members, and eligible members of the RCMP as well as their families. The goal is to help people improve their quality of life through a better understanding of the impact of severe stress. This is done by providing individual assessments, and treatments as well as group therapy services, and by delivering education and research that advance our understanding of these issues.

WRHA Home Care Community Stroke Care Service embraces change during pandemic

The CSCS team provides case coordination, home care support, and in-home rehabilitation (occupational therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation assistant support, social work and speech language pathology) for persons with acute stroke discharged from hospital to home. The service is designed to help people with stroke maximize recovery and respond to evolving client and caregiver needs as they deal with life after stroke. By promoting recovery and using an early supported discharge model, the CSCS team helps clients return home earlier, remain at home, and achieve greater independence in daily activities.
