Equity in Action

Large gaps exist in Winnipeg between those experiencing the best and poorest health. People living in some areas of Winnipeg have nearly 19 years lower life expectancy than people living in other parts of the city. Many of the gaps arise from unfair, unjust and modifiable social circumstances.

It doesn't have to be this way.

When large numbers of people fall short of their full health potential, we all share the consequences one way or another. Health care providers see people every day with illnesses and injuries that didn’t need to happen. Both the human suffering and the costs could have been avoided. The health care system could run more smoothly, waitlists could be shorter, taxpayers’ dollars used more effectively. More people could flourish, reach their full potential and contribute to the community and the economy. Since we are all affected, and since the actions needed to achieve health for all do not lie solely, or even primarily, within the health care sector, we are all in this together.

The Winnipeg Health Region is committed to building partnerships, exchanging ideas and processes and working with community stakeholders to close this gap and work towards “Health for All.”
