A strategy to reduce salt
In 2007, Health Canada formed a sodium working group, which is developing a national sodium reduction strategy that it expects to submit in 2010. The group includes representatives from food manufacturing and food-service industry groups, health-focused non-governmental organizations, the scientific community, consumer advocacy groups, health professional organizations and government representatives.
The multi-staged strategy takes a three-pronged approach that includes research, education and voluntary reduction of sodium levels in processed food products and foods sold in food service establishments.
The group has an interim goal of reducing the daily sodium intake from 3,400 mg to 2,300 mg by 2016 and 1,500 mg in the long term.
