Required Organizational Practices (ROPS)

A Required Organizational Practice (ROP) is “an essential practice that organizations must have in place to enhance patient (client) safety and minimize risk” (Accreditation Canada, 2016). ROPs are based on current research and best practice, and are effective in improving patient safety.

To help determine whether the requirements are being met, ROPs contain major and/or minor “tests for compliance”. Major tests for compliance have an immediate impact on safety. While, minor tests for compliance support safety culture and quality improvement, and may require more time to be fully developed and/or evaluated.

An organization must meet each test for compliance before Accreditation Canada will consider the ROP as being met (Accreditation Canada, 2016).

ROPs are continually being developed, tested and modified through a peer review process and stakeholder consultation. Once a high level of national compliance is achieved, ROPs are transitioned to high priority criteria within the Accreditation QMentum standards (Accreditation, 2016).
