Spinal Arthroplasty

Spinal arthroplasty is in evolving surgical and technological innovation that is aimed at replacing degenerated spinal discs with a metallic or composite implant and maintaining normal spinal mobility.

A number of such places have been developed, but no routinely implantable spinal implants have been approved by Health Canada for surgical use.

The spinal surgical group is currently evaluating several more recently developed implants with improved technical and performance characteristics. Active consideration of which, if any of these devices is suitable for widespread deployment, is subject to further research and product evaluation by Health Canada.

At the present time, in the Canadian health care system, spinal arthroplasty remains investigational.
