Vagus Nerve Stimulation

In patients with multiple seizures despite medication, with more than one focus of seizures, placement of a vagus nerve stimulator can result in seizure reduction. In this procedure, an electrode is placed on the vagus nerve (a nerve which runs under the skin in the neck) and attached to a stimulator placed below the collarbone. Stimulation of the vagus nerve can reduce the frequency of seizures by greater than 50% in about half of patients undergoing the procedure.
