Dr. McDonald was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. He completed pre-medical training at the University of Western Ontario in London before attending medical school at the University of Toronto. After completing a surgical internship at St. Michael's Hospital he entered the neurosurgery training program in Toronto. During his residency, he spent two years studying the basic mechanisms of epilepsy in the Bloorview Epilepsy Research Laboratory and was awarded the Canadian Congress of Neurological Sciences Fellowship in Neuroscience Research. He completed his neurosurgery training and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 2001. He completed a fellowship at St. Michael's hospital that same year.

During his residency, Dr. McDonald developed a strong interest in the surgical treatment of children with neurological illness and pursued this interest at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, where he was Chief Clinical Fellow in 2001-2002. During his time at the Hospital for Sick Children, he continued to develop his understanding and expertise in the surgical treatment of children with neurological disorders.

Dr. McDonald's primary appointment is at the Winnipeg Children's Hospital where he directs the program in Pediatric Neurosurgery. His interests include the surgical treatment of epilepsy, the management of hydrocephalus, neuroendoscopy and the treatment of children with brain tumours. He also has a strong interest in clinical bioethics and has a Master's degree in bioethics from the University of Toronto.

Dr. McDonald is the Program Director of the Residency Training Program for Neurosurgery.
