Michael Goytan

MD, FRCSC

Dr. Michael Goytan joined the Department of Surgery, Section of Orthopedics, in 1998 as an Assistant Professor. 

Dr. Goytan graduated from the University of Manitoba Medical School in 1989 after completing an undergraduate degree in Science and graduate degree training in Biomechanics.  He then completed a mixed surgical internship and orthopedic residency at the Health Sciences Center and St. Boniface Hospitals.  He later became certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Orthopedic Surgery in 1995.  In 1996, Dr. Goytan left Winnipeg to pursue further training in Spine surgery.  He spent the next two years completing spine fellowships in Montreal (Program Director Dr. Max Aebi) and Vancouver (Program Director Dr. Marcel Dvorak), where he gained further experience in the development of instrumentation for the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, and the treatment of spinal cord injury and spine tumor surgery.

Dr. Goytan is a Royal College examiner for certification in Orthopedic Surgery, and is an active member of the Canadian Orthopedic Association, the North American Spine Society, and the Scoliosis Research Society.  He is also a faculty member of AO Spine North America (spine education group devoted to the training of surgeons and nurses). His research interests lie in the evaluation of spinal implants, spinal cord injury, scoliosis, and inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis) and the cervical spine.

Currently, Dr. Goytan is the Head of the Winnipeg Spine Program, Site Director for the Section of Orthopedics, as well an Assistant Professor in the sections of Orthopedics and Neurosurgery/Winnipeg Spine Program at the University of Manitoba.  He is also Program Director of the Winnipeg Spine Fellowship Program, which is devoted to post-graduate training of orthopedic, and neurosurgery fellows in spine surgery.

His practice is devoted to pediatric and adult spinal disorders related to arthritis, tumors, trauma, and deformity. In addition to Health Sciences Center, St Boniface Hospital, Children’s Hospital, he has clinical appointments at Cancer Care, St. Amant, and the Rehabilitation Center For Children (former Shriner’s Hospital).
