Dr. Marc Del Bigio

MD, PhD

Dr. Del Bigio has worked as a Neuropathologist in the Department of Pathology of the Health Sciences Centre since 1994. His professional diagnostic activities in Neuropathology span the full spectrum of surgical (including tumor, nerve and muscle biopsies) and autopsy material. His particular clinical interests are in pediatric neuropathology (including perinatal injuries and inherited / metabolic disorders) and forensic neuropathology.

Dr. Del Bigio is one of the world’s leading authorities concerning how premature birth damages the brain, and how damage to the brain is dependent on the age of an individual. His major research focuses on hydrocephalus and periventricular hemorrhage. Through preclinical studies, he one of the pioneers developing drug treatments that reduce the brain damage in hydrocephalus. More recent work involves investigating how the physical properties of brain determine its response to injury and developing new treatments for brain injury.
