Surgery Program

Types of Bariatric Surgeries Offered

Laparoscopic Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass (RNY)

The majority of patients have the RNY procedure. Here, the top part of the stomach is used to create a new stomach pouch. The pouch is connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine (jejunum), bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine (duodenum). You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size. This reduces the amount of food you can eat at one time. Bypassing part of the intestine reduces how much food and nutrients are absorbed. This leads to weight loss and improvement of other weight related problems.

How is the surgery performed?
This procedure is done by making several small incisions and using small instruments and a camera to guide the surgery (‘key hole’ or laparoscopic approach).

Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy VSG
This procedure is generally reserved for patients who are unable to undergo RNY due to medical or surgical reasons. In this procedure a large portion of your stomach is removed in a “vertical fashion”, leaving a “sleeve”.  The new, smaller stomach is about the size of a banana. This will limit the amount of food you can eat as you will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size. This allows food to pass quickly down the gut, reducing your appetite.

How is the Surgery Performed?
This procedure is done by making several small incisions and using small instruments and a camera to guide the surgery (‘key hole’ or laparoscopic approach).

**Please note that other procedures such adjustable gastric banding, duodenal switch, andintragastric balloons are not offered through our program at this time.
