Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Problem description

Obsessions refer to problems with anxiety-evoking images or thoughts such as repeated worries about contamination, causing harm to others, or not having checked something properly. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors such as excessive hand washing, checking, ordering or mental rituals.

Services available

Consultation is provided regarding diagnosis and treatment of these problems. Cognitive behavior therapy is provided, primarily in a group format. Individual therapy may be available on a limited basis when clinically indicated.

Description of services and treatment

Research has shown that both group and individual cognitive behavior therapy are effective treatments for persons with obsessive-compulsive disorder. These approaches involve a gradual exposure to anxiety-arousing situations, implementing techniques to reduce compulsions, and challenging thought patterns typical of OCD sufferers. The primary service offered is a 16-week  structured group, with 6 to 10 members per group. Individual therapy may be available on a limited basis.
