Health Sciences Centre Pharmacy Services

Pharmacists working out of satellite pharmacy or central pharmacy locations provide integrated, clinical-distributive service to inpatients of this 808-bed tertiary care facility. Using a decentralized model of practice, pharmacists provide direct patient care to Surgery and Medicine patients with a wide range of tertiary subspecialty care needs (e.g., nephrology, neurosurgery, hematology, respirology, hepatology, infectious diseases, organ transplant, etc). Decentralized pharmacists also provide direct patient care for Women’s Health and Renal Health programs. Other pharmacists provide decentralized clinical-distributive service to patients in a selected care area, working from one of the satellite pharmacies:

  • Adult Critical Care
  • Blood & Marrow Transplant/Oncology
  • General Pediatrics
  • Mental Health
  • Neonatal Critical Care
  • Pediatric Critical Care

HSC’s tertiary care environment means that pharmacists have opportunities to sub-specialize in one or more areas over the course of a career. Pharmacists participate actively as members of, or consultants to, multidisciplinary care teams. The on-site Kishor Mehta Drug Information Centre offers excellent access to print and electronic drug information. Pharmacists also have access to expert coaching via advanced practice and Drug Information Centre pharmacists.

In satellite pharmacies, pharmacy technicians provide extensive support of pharmaceutical care initiatives via the computerized (Cerner HealthVision), manual cart-fill unit-dose drug distribution system. In other areas of the Centre, pharmacy technicians facilitate care by supporting the computerized, automated unit-dose (Pyxis) and wardstock drug distribution systems. Pharmacy technicians also support the centralized IV admixture service, TPN and oncology admixture services, investigational drug services, pharmacy purchasing, bulk compounding, wardstock, and inventory control systems. Technician checker programs are active at this site.

Health Sciences Centre Pharmacy Services offers a friendly and intellectually exciting environment in which to grow pharmacy and personal skills. Critical Care satellite pharmacies are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Most other pharmacy service areas are open days and evenings, daily.
