Mealtimes in Personal Care Homes

Manitoba Health outlines dietary standards that every care home must meet:

  • A registered dietitian must approve a 3-week cycle menu (meals repeated after 3 weeks). This ensures food appetizing to residents with variety in meals and that nutrition needs are met (based on Canada’s Food Guide).
  • There must be a minimum of 3 meals and between meal snacks and beverages offered that take into account different cultural and religious practices of residents. There must be different food options to meet any special diet requirements.
  • It is important to have group dining areas that create a social aspect of eating and enjoyment of meals. Help is provided to residents if needed and all volunteers/staff involved at mealtimes are trained in safe feeding practices

Many personal care homes in Winnipeg have on-site kitchens.  A small number receive meals from Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Regional Distribution Facility.  To find out more about this service, click here.  Manitoba Health Standards must be met in all facilities.
