Food Allergies

A food allergy is the body's immune system reacting to a specific food. Signs of an immune (allergic) reaction might include: trouble breathing, hives/rash, vomiting or diarrhea. Anaphylaxis is the most severe type of allergic reaction and can be life threatening.

People with food allergies must avoid the food(s) they are allergic to. Even a trace amount of the food could cause an allergic reaction; therefore, label reading and careful food preparation are important. If you have a food allergy a dietitian can help you make a plan that's right for you and ensure you are getting all the nutrients you need!

Only about 3-5% of the population has a food allergy.  Food allergies are more common in children than adults and some food allergies can be outgrown.

What is Food Intolerance?

A food intolerance is a reaction to a food that does not involve the immune system. An intolerance occurs when the body is not able to digest a certain part of a food. For example, lactose intolerance occurs when the gut cannot digest the natural sugars in milk and causes gas and/or diarrhea. For more information on lactose intolerance click here.
