B Vitamins

B Vitamins helps the body use energy, form red blood cells and keeps your brain and nerves work properly. There are two types of B vitamins that are a special concern for older adults.

Vitamin B6

  • People over the age of 50 need more vitamin B6 than younger adults.
  • Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is found in potatoes, beans, meat, chicken and fish. You should be able to meet your needs by eating well with Canada’s Food Guide.

Vitamin B12

  • Vitamin B12 is found in red meats, fish, eggs, and milk products, but may not be as well absorbed from food as we age.
  • Health Canada advises adults over 50 years to consume foods fortified with vitamin B12or a supplement containing vitamin B12
  • Your doctor can check your B12 level with a simple blood test and recommend additional supplements if necessary.
