Heart Health

The heart has the important job of pumping blood, nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. The heart includes a complex system of veins and arteries; many factors can affect how it works. Blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, and body weight can affect the heart. Good nutrition is an important part of managing these conditions and keeping the heart healthy.

Keeping your heart healthy:

Nutrition Tips

  • Eat a healthy diet that is lower in fat, especially saturated and trans fat, and high in fibre. Dietitians can help you come up with a plan that is right for you.
  • Manage diabetes; having too much sugar in the blood can put strain on the heart. Your health care team including a dietitian can help you!
  • Know and control your blood pressure. Ask a dietitian about how the DASH diet or Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide can help lower blood pressure. Check out some information on sodium.

If You Are Living with Heart Disease

A health care team will help by treating your symptoms, teaching you how to manage at home and by monitoring your condition over time. This will help you to stay as healthy as possible. There are several different types of heart disease, with separate treatment plans. Ask your health care team for more information.

Healthy eating is an essential part of keeping your heart healthy.  A dietitian can help answer your questions and make a plan that is right for you.
