Diabetes is a disorder that causes too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. Insulin, a hormone, helps our body absorb this extra sugar and use it for energy. When people have diabetes, their body has no insulin or does not produce enough insulin resulting in problems with the way sugars, protein and fats are broken down and used in the body.

If You are Living with Diabetes

A team of health care providers will help you to manage your diabetes by:1) treating your symptoms, 2) teaching you and your family how to manage diabetes and 3) by monitoring your diabetes over time to keep you as healthy as possible and reduce the risk of complications.

Healthy eating is an essential part of staying well with diabetes. A dietitian will answer your questions and help to make a plan that is right for you. Just the Basics is a great resource to get you started!
