Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is a disorder of the gut. In celiac disease, the body’s immune system reacts to a protein called gluten found in some grains (wheat, rye and barley). Gluten causes changes in the gut (intestine) that make it difficult to absorb all nutrients: protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals.

Celiac disease is a life long condition. Treatment is a gluten free diet. It is important to avoid all gluten foods in order to heal the gut and allow nutrients to be absorbed. Celiac disease must be controlled to prevent nutritional deficiencies and related conditions such as osteoporosis. A dietitian can answer your questions and help you make a plan to enjoy a gluten free diet!

Note:Gluten sensitive individuals may experience a variety of symptoms and feel better when following a gluten free diet. Gluten sensitivity is not celiac disease and people with a sensitivity are not at risk for the same nutrient deficiencies. Gluten sensitivity is not well understood and is still being researched.
