Infection Prevention & Control

Respiratory Outbreaks

Respiratory outbreaks are caused by viruses such as influenza A, influenza B, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) or the common cold virus. Symptoms for these infections usually are coughing, fever, sore throat, fatigue, and body aches and pains.

The length of time the symptoms last depends on the type of infection causing the outbreak. You may find signage at the door on the infection prevention and control precautions you should take.

Please confirm with the nursing staff as to how you can limit transfer of the infection. The best prevention of these viruses is to practice proper hand hygiene.

Hand hygiene

Hand hygiene is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of infections.  Sanitizing your hands with hand sanitizer and washing hands with soap and water are both called hand hygiene.  Practicing proper hand hygiene helps to reduce the number of germs on your hands, thereby helping to keep you healthy and stopping germs from spreading to your family, friends, coworkers, and others.

Hand hygiene is very important in healthcare settings as many patients/residents/clients are often more vulnerable to infection.  Proper hand hygiene practice involves using hand sanitizer and rubbing it into your hands until they are completely dry, or washing their hands within soap and water for 10-15 seconds.   Alcohol based hand sanitizer is the first recommended option for hand hygiene, unless hands are visibly soiled.

Using hand sanitizer when you enter and exit a healthcare facility, a unit or room can help keep you and the patients/residents/clients healthy.
