What is PPROM?

PPROM occurs when the membrane around the baby, also called the bag of waters, breaks (or tears) before 37 weeks gestation. Women with PPROM may have a small trickle or a large gush of fluid through the vagina. Fluid drains in varying amounts after the first time. You may start to leak fluid before you go into labour.

After your membranes rupture, you are at risk for:

  • Infection inside your uterus
  • Premature labour and birth
  • Cord prolapse

Your role in helping to prevent preterm labour and/or complications of PPROM is to:

  • Know the signals your body is giving you
  • Prevent infection
  • Understand which of your activities may lead to the symptoms of preterm labour
