Specialty Orientations

Exciting opportunities exist for nurses in critical care, emergency and perioperative nursing. Specialty orientations are a component for these types of nursing. Depending on the specialty and program, you may either be able to earn as you learn or be hired in that specialty after finishing the orientation.

Critical Care Nursing

If working with the latest technology to treat critically ill patients in medical and surgical intensive care units sounds intriguing, you may want to consider Critical Care Nursing.

Emergency Nursing

If you remain calm while under pressure, thrive in a fast-paced environment and like to be challenged, emergency nursing may be the right fit for you.

Perioperative Orientation

The Winnipeg Health Region Surgery Program offers a 16 week perioperative orientation. This orientation involves:

Three weeks of theory/labs

The theory component includes presentations from professionals who are experts in the area. Content is based on the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada Standards, Guidelines, and Position Statements for Perioperative Registered Nursing Practice, Canadian Standards Association, current perioperative textbooks, and evidence based practice. The labs provide an opportunity for participants to practice the technical skills required to function in the circulating and scrub roles.

13 weeks of clinical experience

The clinical component provides participants with the opportunity to gain experience in the operating room environment, while being "buddied" with a preceptor.

Successful completion of the orientation will allow the participant to function as a novice perioperative nurse. The orientation is open to all facilities within the Winnipeg Health Region, as well as facilities from other health authorities within Manitoba.

Participants include new nurse hires as well as senior practicum students who intend to seek employment in the perioperative environment. Depending on demand, this orientation is offered four or five times a year.
