Effective management and leadership skills are essential to our success as an organization. Organization and Staff Development provides a number of developmental programs for managers within the system:
Management Development Workshops
The Management and Leadership Development workshops and seminars are intended for managers and supervisors as well as employees who;
- have been identified by their manager as potential successors for future management positions and/or;
- have received approval from their manager to attend workshops for further professional development.
These workshops and seminars provide practical tools for health sector managers and supervisors, giving them access to the knowledge and skills they need to handle issues and challenges they face on a daily basis.
These sessions are developed to reflect the realities of the health sector environment, and most often are delivered by individuals who work within our system and have extensive practical health-sector experience with the subject matter being presented.
WRHA Management Development Workshops
Aboriginal Health Policy Workshop
This workshop is designed to provide decision makers within the organization the tools to effectively make change, understand the obligation and accountability of management and board members to make a difference for all staff members of WRHA and affiliates.
Participants who enroll in this workshop will experience the following:
- Increase understanding of health policy and how it impacts Aboriginal patients and families
- Raise awareness of Aboriginal historical issues that have contributed to today’s inequalities for Aboriginal peoples within “systems” and institutional and social racism.
Participants may include but not be limited to WRHA board members, all levels of management and Aboriginal Health Human Resources to the board (AHHR).

WRHA/RRC Health Services Management Certificate Program
WRHA Executive Succession Program
A regional process is in place for accessing sponsorship to external leadership development programs such as Royal Roads University, Health Leaders Institute and the EXTRA program. The purpose of this initiative is to provide a collaborative process for identifying, administering and sponsoring professional development for potential successors to various leadership positions in the future.
The Reference Tool Building Leaders for the Future Succession Planning Resource Guide is provided to assist healthcare leaders and managers to initiate or expand succession planning activities.
The Guide complements the WRHA’s existing succession planning activities such as the WRHA/Red River College Health Services Management Certificate program, and the professional development sponsorships offered for the Graduate Certificate in Health Systems Leadership through Royal Roads University and the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation’s EXTRA program.
No applications are being sought at this time.
