Golden Links Lodge residents return home

Over the past two days, residents evacuated from Golden Links Lodge last spring due to flooding returned to their home. The 88 bed personal care home facility, located in St. Vital, incurred extensive damage after its basement filled with water on April 20 2014, destroying all of the facility's mechanical and electrical systems.

All of the 86 residents living in the facility at the time were safely evacuated to other facilities across Winnipeg. Many of Golden Links Lodge's residents were then transferred soon afterward to the River Ridge Retirement Residence, where they remained under the care of Golden Links Lodge staff while repairs were made to their flooded facility.

"I want to thank residents and families for their patience," said Ms. Gina Trinidad, Chief Operating Officer for Long Term Care and Deer Lodge Centre with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. "It has been a long journey, but we are happy to have our doors open again. I also want to again thank staff and management at Golden Links Lodge, the River Ridge facility, and staff across the Region last year who made it possible to safely evacuate and accommodate residents on an emergency basis."

"Golden Links Lodge Residents, family and staff have been very committed and I want to thank them for being so accommodating," said Ms. Mary Knight, Chief Executive Officer for Golden Links Lodge. "It is exciting to have everyone back home and to show them all the work we have done while they were away."

Significant work was required to ensure the building was safe for re-occupancy. Repairs to the building have included:

  • Replacing a portion of the basement floor;
  • Re-fire proofing the basement ceiling;
  • Reconstructing the building weeping tile/drainage system;
  • Installing new mechanical, air handling, electrical, and electrical back-up equipment;
  • Installing a new elevator; and,
  • Re-constructing the entire basement to pre-flood conditions including: new building system controls, new life safety systems, new laundry facility, fire sprinkler re-work, new mechanical, electrical and storage rooms, and new staff washroom and locker rooms.

While flood remediation work was occurring, a significant number of additional upgrades and renovations were made to the facility including:

  • Upgrade and relocation of the emergency generator;
  • Installation of four new resident bath tubs and renovations to tub rooms;
  • Upgrades to dining room flooring and millwork;
  • Upgrades of corridor flooring;
  • Painting of the entire inside of the building including all 88 Resident rooms; and
  • Replacement of both nursing stations.

Estimated building repair costs are $4 million, the majority of which was covered by insurance. Additional upgrades and renovations were funded by Manitoba Health and Golden Links Lodge.

Mechanical systems and equipment has undergone commissioning, testing, and inspections to ensure they are running safely and reliably. Repairs and remediation work was also nspected by Public Health, the Office of the Fire Commissioner, and the City of Winnipeg prior to residents returning.
