Second ACCESS Centre damaged by water

Earlier this afternoon, several heating coils froze and burst resulting in water damage to the first and second floors of a second access centre within the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

At about 2:00 p.m., water began leaking through the ceiling tiles of ACCESS Downtown, an access centre located at 640 Main Street. The water infiltration was noticed quickly, and the impact and damage was significantly contained.

Staff working at the centre have been evacuated, and have been relocated to temporary work locations in the downtown area. Contingency plans have been implemented to minimize any service disruptions to clients, and scheduled appointments are being rescheduled as appropriate.

The extent of the damage is still being assessed. How the heating coils froze remains undetermined at this time. No injuries to staff or clients have been identified.

ACCESS Downtown has approximately 110 staff working within the facility on a daily basis, and provides diverse services including a primary care clinic, public health, community mental health services, and employment and income assistance.
