In February 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that it would no longer be a criminal offence in Canada for physicians to assist someone to end their life in certain circumstances.
The Supreme Court instructed the federal government to create legislation regarding medical assistance in dying (MAID). This legislation came into effect June 17, 2016.
Under the new legislation, physicians may provide medical assistance in dying to eligible patients.
