ACCESS Downtown wins accessibility award

The new ACCESS Downtown centre has officially been open for a month, and already they've won an award for their accessible design.

The Winnipeg Accessibility Award was presented by the City of Winnipeg to the ACCESS Downtown health and social services clinic located at 640 Main Street. The award reflects both the design of the centre and the attitude of its staff.

The words on the award itself read, "Celebrating the spirit of universal design through the creation and design of welcoming and inclusive environments."

Leslie Badger, project coordinator with the Winnipeg Health Region's Capital Planning department says ACCESS Downtown features many barrier-free features, such as wide hallways and examining rooms built to handle wheelchairs.

"There are overhead lifts for bariatric patients. Colour was used to cue visually impaired patients. And there are 'parking areas' for those in wheelchairs," says Badger, who attended the award presentation at City Hall on behalf of the Winnipeg Health Region. "This award shows how we show our respect for our clients and our staff."

The award was hung at ACCESS Downtown on Friday, October 15. Two other ACCESS centres in Winnipeg have also received a similar award for accessibility; ACCESS River East and ACCESS Transcona.
