If compassion helps us relate better to other people, self-compassion helps us relate better to ourselves. This empowers us to take better care of ourselves.

"In order to be truly compassionate, we need to be self-compassionate. Most of us aren't very good at that," he says.

How do you become more self-compassionate? By treating yourself with the same care and support as you would a good friend, dealing with emotions rather than avoiding or denying them and self soothing during tough times.

"When we know how to be self compassionate and deal with difficult emotions, we are better able to coach and support our patients and clients to do that," says Wall.
