Partners in Inner-city Integrated Prenatal Care (PIIPC)

Facilitated Access

This component originated as an extension of the Community Based Prenatal Care Initiative and Street Outreach Initiative. Through this initiative, women who have no prenatal care (PNC) or at risk for inadequate PNC and live in the the three inner-city neighborhoods of Pt. Douglas, Downtown, and Inkster are offered facilitated access. These include women who:

  1. Present at Women’s Hospital (Obstetrical Triage Unit, Ambulatory Care, or admitting).  These women are referred to the Women’s Hospital-PIIPC Contact who arranges PNC and appointments to meet the needs of the pregnant woman.
  2. Present at Sage House - a program of Mount Carmel Clinic which is a health, outreach, and resource centre for street-involved .  The Nurse Practitioner at Sage House offers facilitated access to PNC through the PIIPC project by referring these women  to the midwives at Mount Carmel Clinic or HCP at Women’s Hospital.
  3. Are reffered to the midwives involved in the PIIPC project from other programs or HCP.  These women are encouraged to attend any of the six Community Based Prenatal Programs.
