Palliative Care – Indigenous Perspectives on End of Life

One-Day Workshop

GOAL

Together we can learn how to enhance levels of communication so as to gain a deeper level of understanding of Indigenous patients and their families. We want to ensure that all patients are able to receive care that meets the needs and expectations of their given situation.

WORKSHOP

This workshop will explore Indigenous perspectives on death and dying. As death is a natural part of life, it is also a significant part of our journey. We will explore traditional beliefs and values that may impact on how we, in western medicine, provide care. Both palliative care and the Medicine Wheel provide a holistic approach which includes the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs of the individual, family members and community. This approach respects all cultural beliefs and values, while honouring individual perspective and needs.

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN:

  • Through the use of oral teachings and sharing circles, participants will experience Indigenous methods of teaching
  • Explore personal cultural perceptions
  • Gain understanding of end of life concerns as shared by Indigenous Elders
  • Deepen knowledge of the Seven Sacred Teachings and enhance abilities to have discussions with Indigenous people
  • Clearly understand the different beliefs and values between traditional and health-care cultures on Death and Dying
  • Identify and explore how to overcome barriers found in the workplace
  • Identify how to access valuable resources

This workshop is designed for all disciplines in all health-care settings.

WHAT IS PALLIATIVE CARE?

Palliative Care is health care for individuals, and their families, who are living with a life-limiting illness, usually at an advanced stage. The goal of palliative care is to provide services aimed at promoting comfort rather than a cure. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Palliative Care Program focuses on managing physical symptoms as well as providing social, emotional, and spiritual support for individuals and their families throughout the course of the illness, including bereavement support.

Contact the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Palliative Care Program at 204-237-2400.
